The UK Rail Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN) brings together 16 of the rail industry’s leading suppliers, together with a consortium of universities, to create the world-class Centres of Excellence that will be at the heart of the programme. UKRRIN is made up of three academic Centres of Excellence: Digital Systems led by University of Birmingham, Rolling Stock led by the University of Huddersfield, and Infrastructure led by the University of Southampton; and a Centre of Excellence in Testing, led by Network Rail: at-scale test facilities including Network Rail’s Rail Innovation and Development Centres at Melton and Tuxford, London Underground’s Acton R&D Centre, and Quinton Rail Technology Centre at Long Marston.
These Centres of Excellence will deliver world-leading research from inception to test and to market application (both for UK and global markets). With advanced, purpose-built simulation and testing facilities they will provide the ability to deliver new products and technology to market more quickly. UKRRIN will be instrumental in placing the UK railway supply chain firmly on the world map for leadership in innovation and change in railway technology, products and services.
